How to Avoid Common Workout Mistakes This Spring

As the weather warms up this spring, you may be tempted to make changes to your workout routine, take your workout outside, or try a new exercise altogether. To stay safe and achieve a balanced workout, the sports medicine doctors at Carolina Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center say it’s important to have a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of a new exercise before beginning.

“Switching up your workout routine can be very beneficial to your overall health and fitness,” says Dr. Ian D. Archibald, sports medicine doctor at Carolina Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center. “But trying to perform an exercise without a complete understanding of the necessary equipment and techniques required for the exercise can result in injury.”

Varying your routine by incorporating new planes of motion is a simple, safe change. Using only seated workout machines can cause muscle imbalance and predispose your body to injuries, while using a variety of workout methods and techniques, including side-to-side exercises, rotating movements, standing, cardio, and seated exercises, allows your body to work out in a way that’s similar to how you use it in everyday life.

Dr. Archibald says it’s important to vary your plane of motion both during a workout and from one workout to the next. If you’ve spent most of the winter lifting weights indoors, he suggests trying to incorporate something new this spring, like biking, running, or swimming. Challenging your body to try something new will keep you balanced by helping you strengthen and train different muscle groups.

Following these tips will help you stay safe and make the most of your workouts. If you experience a workout-related injury, schedule an appointment with one of the sports medicine doctors at Carolina Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center by calling 704-312-4379.
