Foot Injury Doesn’t Stop LMU Player

A stress fracture in her left foot threatened to cut short Megan Ackerman’s junior year as shortstop of Loyola Marymount’s softball team. While she missed the first weekend, she returned for the rest of the year with the help of Dr. Richard Ferkel, a foot and ankle specialist at Southern California Orthopedic Institute (SCOI).

Ackerman isn’t quite sure how or when the stress fracture occurred. It may have been when she landed on the bag awkwardly before the 2008 season, or it may have occurred gradually from excessive stress. However it happened, Ackerman was in pain with the season approaching.

Having received treatment from him before, she visited Dr. Ferkel of SCOI for evaluation. Dr. Ferkel diagnosed the stress fracture, recommended a treatment plan, and monitored the situation as Loyola Marymount’s season began.

Ackerman wore a walking boot for two months and underwent lower body therapy to stay strong and conditioned. As a result, her fracture healed and she was able to get back on the field.

Ackerman first visited Dr. Ferkel when she broke her ankle playing basketball as a senior at Westlake High School. She credits Dr. Ferkel for finding and treating loose bone fragments in her ankle that another doctor previously did not detect.

Dr. Ferkel sees patients with foot and ankle injuries and other sports injuries at clinics in Van Nuys and Bakersfield. To schedule an appointment, contact SCOI at (818) 901-6600.
