Ultrasound Technology Proves Useful in Orthopedics

It’s safer than an X-ray and quicker and less expensive than an MRI. You might be used to seeing them in an OBGYN’s office, but not an orthopedist’s office … until now. Physicians at Southern California Orthopedic Institute (SCOI) are now using ultrasound technology to take a closer look at the musculoskeletal system.

“This technology works really well for us and it is a lot easier for the patient” said Dr. Andrew M. Blecher, a primary care sports medicine specialist at SCOI. “The musculoskeletal ultrasound gives us a dynamic image instead of a static image, which allows us to see the joint in motion. This leads to a more accurate diagnosis.” He went on to explain that musculoskeletal ultrasounds have many benefits, including the following:

Having this type of technology available allows physicians to see a patient’s muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. Tendons and muscles can be seen so well, in fact, that individual fibers can be pinpointed. Seeing these components so clearly can assist the physician whenever an injection needs to be made at an injury site.

Musculoskeletal ultrasounds also come in very handy for patients who are physically unable to have an MRI. “Patients with pacemakers or metal implants are restricted from having an MRI done,” stated Blecher. “This technology gives them options that they never had before.”

This service is now available in three SCOI office locations; Van Nuys, Valencia, and Thousand Oaks. If you would like to know more about musculoskeletal ultrasounds, contact SCOI today at (877) 952-8484 to make an appointment with a specialist.
