The Region’s Only Specialized Orthopedic Trauma Center

For more than 10 years, the specialty-trained doctors in the Trauma Center at Slocum have provided subspecialty trauma care for patients across the region—from Oregon to Washington and California.

“Initially, the Trauma Center at Slocum was created to provide advanced treatment for traumatic injuries at our local community hospitals in the Eugene and Springfield area,” explains Dr. Thomas K. Wuest, fellowship-trained trauma doctor at Slocum Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. “We wanted to make sure any patient who came to one of our local emergency rooms had access to local specialty trauma care.”

Now, the trauma center has become a regional referral center for orthopedic trauma, extending beyond the local emergency rooms to referrals from other orthopedic doctors for elective cases of complex deformities and fractures. This allows patients throughout the state and region to receive advanced, individualized care for any orthopedic, traumatic, or extremity injuries close to home.

With additional training and experience in trauma and complex fractures, the trauma specialists at Slocum Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine provide 24/7 coverage and real-time consultation for both emergency rooms and referring primary care and orthopedic doctors.

“We are able to digitally review X-rays and provide real-time direct consultation to emergency room doctors and staff,” Dr. Wuest says. “This allows us to quickly and efficiently set up a specialized plan for a patient’s care.”

The specialty-trained trauma doctors in the Trauma Center at Slocum have all received advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of traumatic injuries.

Dr. Daniel V. Sheerin has focused his practice on the treatment of fractures, both straightforward and complex. A graduate of the George Washington University School of Medicine, Dr. Sheerin completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at George Washington University Medical Center. He then completed advanced fellowship training in orthopedic traumatology at the RA Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Dr. Daniel C. Fitzpatrick specializes in the treatment of fractures and complex injuries. He completed his medical school and residency training at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Dr. Fitzpatrick actively participates in research aiming to improve the healing of fractures.

Dr. Thomas K. Wuest provides care for complex fractures and trauma. A graduate of the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Dr. Wuest went on to complete his residency in the department of orthopedic surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He received advanced fellowship training in orthopaedic trauma and elective orthopaedic surgery at the North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary.
