Understanding Wrist Tendinitis

Wrist tendinitis is a condition caused by trauma or repetitive use that results in wrist pain and swelling. The wrist specialists at Sierra Pacific Orthopedics offer several treatment options for wrist tendinitis.

“Placing the wrist in a splint is often the first step,” explains Dr. Alexander L. Majors, hand and wrist surgeon at Sierra Pacific Orthopedics. “Resting the tendon will decrease inflammation.”

Applying an ice pack to the inflamed area can also provide relief. The ice cools inflammation, decreases swelling, and stimulates blood flow to the area of tendinitis. More severe cases of wrist tendinitis may require cortisone injections, which are applied directly to the inflamed area.

When other treatment methods have failed to solve the problem, the inflammatory tissue can be removed through surgery. This will eliminate pain in the wrist and create more space for tendons to move freely.
