New Spine Surgery Technology Relieves Pain More Quickly
Intended to stop the motion at a painful vertebral segment, spinal fusion surgery is the most common procedure performed on patients suffering from back pain. However, a new surgical method is making this difficult procedure easier for patients.
“Using the PEEK interbody cage system, this new approach to the spinal fusion procedure has been successful in decreasing pain for patients,” explains Dr. Henry E. Aryan, spine surgeon at Sierra Pacific Orthopedics. “Additionally, the methods for this surgery have advanced tremendously over the past 6-7 years, allowing for greater flexibility and adaptability for patients while significantly reducing pain."
Traditionally performed by removing a portion of bone from another area of the body and placing it in the affected area of the spine, spinal fusion surgery would, in some cases, cause intense pain within the donor bone area of the body. However, this advancement to the procedure, referred to as the PEEK interbody cage system, uses plastic spacers with the same consistency as bones and eliminates pain and the need for a donor bone site.
“Using the PEEK interbody cage system, we’re able to make placements more easily, leading to higher fusion rates and a more anatomically correct spine,” Dr. Aryan says. “This results in a much lower risk of infection or irritation than when using bone from a donor site.”
Though using this system for a spinal fusion surgery still requires a substantial recovery period, Dr. Aryan’s patients experience much less tissue pain and shorter recovery times using PEEK interbody cages than those using other surgical methods.
