Advancing Healthcare Technology: What Does It Mean For You?

Throughout history, advances in science have defined the practice of medicine. Now, however, technology is providing an abundance of new opportunities for doctors to treat, educate, and interact with patients. For the doctors at Slocum Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, the use of iPads has made patient education easier and more individually focused.

Dr. Daniel C. Fitzpatrick says that when he’s speaking with a patient, having an iPad in hand makes a substantial difference.

“I start with a blank page. Then, when I’m explaining a diagnosis, condition, treatment method, or surgical procedure, I can use the iPad to draw pictures or diagrams showing exactly how the injury or condition is affecting that specific patient and how a particular treatment could help,” Dr. Fitzpatrick explains.

The notes and diagrams made in the exam room can be saved directly to a patient’s medical history chart and accessed quickly at a future appointment. Additionally, patients can take a printed copy of the diagram or picture home. Doctors can also show patients X-rays and test results directly on the iPad screen.

“The opportunities are limitless,” Dr. Fitzpatrick says.
