Understanding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful and debilitating disorder that afflicts more than one million people. It is the result of a pinching of the median nerve in the hand, causing pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, and inflammation.

The hand doctors at Slocum Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine provide a variety of treatment options, from conservative care to advanced surgical techniques. Conservative treatments are always considered first, but your doctor may progress to more aggressive techniques if your symptoms persist.

Conservative methods:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications help decrease symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome
  • A wrist brace might help night symptoms
  • Cortisone injections reduce inflammation and may be lasting

However, if conservative methods fail to provide relief, surgery may be necessary.

“Minimally endoscopic surgery is one option,” explains Dr. Kenneth P. Butters, hand and upper extremity surgeon at Slocum Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. “Another option is a limited incision in the palm to relieve pressure on the median nerve.“

If you are experiencing pain or irritation that you believe may be related to carpal tunnel syndrome, call the hand doctors at Slocum Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at 541.249.4091 today to schedule an appointment.
