Bringing Awareness to Youth Physical Literacy Through the Active Youth Consortium

Early childhood physical literacy unlocks the potential for lifelong enjoyment of physical activity and enhanced athletic performance. Studies show that kids who are physically fit enjoy greater academic achievement and higher lifetime earning potential than those who are not active.

On July 21st, 2014, the Slocum Foundation and Slocum Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine partnered with the University of Oregon's International Sports Science Symposium, LaneKids, PacificSource Health Plans, and the Neurospine Institute Foundation to host the Active Youth Consortium's Solution Revolution!

KidSports, Healthy Moves, Eugene City Recreation, Lane Coalition for Healthy Active Youth, Safe Routes to Schools, Kick City, LaneKids, The Child Center, Lane United Football Club, and Oregon Research Institute provided age-specific movement activities and games, while parents learned about free and low-cost physical activity opportunities for children in their neighborhoods.

"The Solution Revolution event emphasized how youth physical literacy impacts cognitive development just as much as physical development," said Dr. Jason Tavakolian, who serves as vice president on the Foundation Board of Directors. "The collaboration of Active Youth Consortium members with the University of Oregon's International Sports Science Symposium is a great example of how science can be translated to strong programs benefitting our community's youth."

Through support from the Slocum Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, the Slocum Foundation is able to pursue the mission of advancing musculoskeletal care through research, education, and collaboration.
